105 Years Old Push Reel Mower Restoration - Why Did People Stop Using These?
In this video, I restore an old rusty push reel mower made in Germany in the 1920s.More about the restoration process: It was highly challenging but rewarding. I learned a lot about reel mowers. One of the wheels was chipped and had a lot of missing parts that I had to remake; that required a lot of skill and patience. I worked on it for 15 days every day. If you want to learn more about this antique German push reel mower, I encourage you to watch this video. When I saw it, I was shocked at how bad it looked; it was full of rust, bends, cracks, and missing parts! At the end of the video, I made a test so you can see how it works!
More about the push reel lawn mowers:
The first United States patent for a reel lawn mower was granted to Amariah Hills on January 12, 1868. In 1870, Elwood McGuire of Richmond, Indiana, designed a human-pushed lawn mower, which was very lightweight and a commercial success.The one in the video was made by Brill, a German company, in 1920, but they also exported them, especially to the United Kingdom.
Why did people stop using reel mowers?
Reel mowers fell out of favor in the 1960s and '70s, probably as yard sizes increased. Self-propelled mowers made it easy to cut the lawn with little effort on anyone's part. I hope I have caught everything, but if you have any questions, you can comment, and I'll get back to you!
Cheers! Johnny.

    Why do you test for lead before sandblasting please?

    • @rustyshadesrestoration
      @rustyshadesrestoration 2 дні тому

      Hi! Because lead was present in paint till the 70s and it is very toxic for humans if we inhale it. The test helps me to know how to clean the part. If positive, I'm using a paint stripper because it doesn't produce tiny particles of lead paint that can contaminate the working place like a sandblaster will do.

    I have a modern version of this -- Fiskars 18" StaySharp Max Reel Push Lawn Mower, and I love it. It does , however, require some babysitting and maintenance. I have many trees on my property, so many little twigs get into the blades and at the end of Summer blades get pretty dull. It is quite some work to sharpen them again. The standard back lapping method with abrasive compound that Fiskars recommends only works for honing blades that are already relatively sharp. So, first I need to use a file and sharpen each blade with a file, then disassemble a few parts of the mower, remove the chain, and do the back lapping with abrasive compound for about 15-20 minutes, and finally finish by spending another 10 minutes adjusting the blades so that they are just the right height above the bar. Lots of work at the beginning of each season. Takes at least an hour, maybe longer with time spent setting up and then cleaning the workplace, and still I can't always get the blades sharp enough so that they pass the paper-cut test. I do get them sharp enough to cut the grass with small pushing effort though. This is not for everybody.

    Well when I was a youngster we had one of those and since I don't think I was even 4' tall at the time it was almost impossible for me to push and it was completely new it had a metal handle!!! And I just saw that poor gentleman pushing it over the ground with extreme difficulty and the grass was uncut behind it!!! So I'm guessing that's why no one wanted the crazy contraption to begin with!!!! But you're definitely a devoted excellent restorations expert!!!! And it was actually entertaining as well!!! So thank you kind sir!!!!
